Attendance pattern or modes

The attendance mode for a course describes the general pattern of attendance for learning and assessment. For university students the three possible attendance patterns are: full-time, part-time or external and distance.

The number of credit points required to make up a part-time load varies between each university. Your attendance pattern for the semester will be indicated on your university enrolment records or can be ascertained by contacting your institute of study.

For TAFE NSW students the three possible attendance modes are:

  • Full-time – a weekly study attendance of between 12 and 30 hours.
  • Part-time – a weekly day or evening study attendance of less than 12 hours. This study pattern may include attendance on evenings or weekends.
  • Flexible attendance – flexible attendance allows for learning and assessment in a variety of modes. This may include on campus, off campus, distance learning, online learning, and combinations of any of the above.

Employment classification – Classifications of School Administrative and Support (SAS) staff:

  • Aboriginal Education Officer
  • School Administrative Officer
  • School Administrative Manager
  • School Learning Support Officer Pre-school
  • School Learning Support Officer
  • School Learning Support Officer Braille Transcriber
  • School Learning Support Officer Sign Interpreter
  • School Learning Support Officer Ethnic

Expendable grant

SAS study assistance is an expendable grant which if not used for the semester in which it is granted, is lost. SAS staff must re-apply for study assistance each semester.

Evidence of enrolment

Evidence is written proof from your institute of study that you are enrolled in your course or modules for the period of the study assistance application.

Field day

Field days are single-day excursions that can form part of courses or subjects. Attendance may be compulsory depending on the institution.

Key recruitment priority area

The Human Resources Directorate identify key recruitment priority areas each year. These key recruitment priority areas are usually key learning areas and or subjects within key learning areas or recruitment to geographical areas of NSW. Key recruitment priority areas are designed to address the staffing needs in schools.

Nationally recognised qualification

National qualifications are defined in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework which provides a single, coherent framework for all recognised qualifications from Senior Secondary Certification to PhD. Residential school

Residential schools are a part of many courses offered to distance students. They vary from one to five days in duration and attendance may be compulsory depending on the institution of study. Students undertaking a course requiring attendance at a residential school will be made aware of this after enrolment in the course and or subject.

School classification

The classification of schools is based on whole school enrolments, including regular class enrolments, pre-school enrolments and student support enrolments.

School classifications can be found by searching a school in the department staff directory.


Traineeships combine work and structured training. SAS staff who are undertaking a traineeship are ineligible to receive additional study assistance.
