GPS Cows

Online synchronous courses for technology mandatory and elective agriculture subjects that develop skills and understanding in the use of GPS in agriculture.

Description

These courses are online versions of GPS Cows RG03883 and GPS Cows Advanced RG06415 face to face courses.

In these courses, participants explore the use of data to inform good agricultural practice. Participants learn to generate, clean and analyse GPS tracking data to make decisions that improve production efficiencies, sustainability and animal welfare. In the advanced course, participants use multiple data sets with the GPS data to draw conclusions and make informed decisions. The courses focus on skill development for teachers and good pedagogical practice in the integration of this technology in the classroom with students.

GPS Cows Online

Summary

This course has been developed to support the implementation of the Agriculture and Food Technologies and Digital Technologies contexts in the Technology Mandatory Years 7-8 syllabus. The program has been co-developed by the NSW Department of Education and Central Queensland University Australia (CQU). Participants will develop skills and understanding of GPS and its application in the collection of data. They will analyse both their own data and existing datasets to improve agricultural production. The workshop will model pedagogy for teaching the unit to students in Stage 4.

This is an online version of GPS Cows RG03883. It is identical to the face to face course except that the presenter will deliver the training live online over two afternoons.

Participants who have already completed the face to face version of the course (GPS Cows RG03883) are welcome to participate but will not be credited with additional registered hours.



GPS Cows Advanced Online

Summary

This is an online version of GPS Cows Advanced RG06415. It is identical to the face to face course except that the presenter will deliver the training live online over two afternoons.

Participants complete both pre- and post-workshop learning to develop comprehensive knowledge to implement the GPS Cows Advanced resource in the classroom. The pre-workshop learning requires participants to collect and download a livestock tracking dataset from their school animals.

Participants use their own school data to complete activities that develop their skills and understanding of the application of GPS technology in the agricultural industry in order to improve the economic, environmental and animal welfare aspects of food and fibre production. Presenters describe and model effective pedagogy for teaching the unit to students in Stage 5.

Post-workshop, participants engage with their colleagues online to share their feedback and experiences with their implementation of the GPS technology. This forum will be moderated by facilitators and provide opportunities for participants to broaden their understanding through online networking.

As well as attending the 6 hour workshop, participants must complete both the pre- and post- workshop requirements to receive 7.5 hours of NESA registered professional development.

Participants who have already completed the face to face version of the course (GPS Cows Advanced RG06415) are welcome to participate but will not be credited with additional registered hours.
