Voting for the People’s Choice winner in this year’s Film by Online Film Festivals is now open.

A total of 31 films across two festivals were live streamed today – narrowed down from a field of more than 200 submissions.

Students, parents and teachers are now invited to vote for the People’s Choice winner, with the winner announced on Monday, 23 November at midday.

Film by coordinator Glen Carter said before the pandemic they had planned to hold 25 film festivals were held across the state.

These ranged from Film By the Sea, which features student filmmakers from the Sutherland Shire, to Film by the Far West centred on Broken Hill, Film by Tweed on the NSW northern border and Film by the Sapphire Coast down south.

“Despite the pandemic a lot of schools were still making films, so we wanted to give them the opportunity to share their stories,” he said.

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott, who opens the virtual festivals, said the Film by initiative was important because film gave everyone “the opportunity to tell their story, to have a voice and to be heard”.

“It is collaborative by nature, involves high levels of critical thinking and stimulates creativity. It also happens to be a whole lot of fun,” he said.

For those who missed the live stream, the videos are available on demand from this afternoon.
