All the details
The Cool Controller Competition aims to encourage and support Stage 3 and 4 students to use a design thinking approach to develop an improved ‘Smart’ control unit for the Cooler Classroom air conditioning and fresh air ventilation units.
Who won the Cool Controller Competition?
The judges had a very difficult time choosing the winner, so awarded joint first place to the STAAC team from Ashfield PS and the SMARTAH team from Dudley PS. Two highly commended awards went to the Ryno Tech and Smart Rectangle teams, both from Quakers Hill PS. Watch the finals showcase now.
Students were encouraged to think like entrepreneurs and completely redesign the current system in terms of connectivity, data capture and visual appearance. The design solutions they came up with focused on sustainable practices for:
- improved thermal comfort – temperature, humidity and airflow
- improved indoor air quality – CO2.
See Key dates.
Students were encouraged to apply innovative ‘blue sky’ thinking to produce a design concept for a ‘Smart’ device and prepare a pitch to sell their idea.
Each finalist team received a micro:bit ‘Lab Pack’ that could be used in the classroom for STEM activities.
The first 100 teams that entered received a Splat 3D design tools (Gold in the Design Excellence and Sustainable Design - Australian Good Design Awards 2019) and the first 100 DoE teachers that registered received a free PD Masterclass in Designing for Sustainability. Unfortunately all these places have now been filled and the prizes redeemed.
