This video from ABC Education explores length by comparing the heights of different people. It helpfully references when your child might hear units of measurement like feet and inches, since Australians use the metric measurement system which uses units of measurement like metres and centimetres.
After watching the video together, ask your child to list or draw a picture of everyone in your family, from shortest to tallest.
If curiousity strikes them, help your child investigate the length of things around the house using tools like a tape measure. They might wonder things like:
- "If we lined up all the furniture in the living room from end to end, how far would it stretch?"
- If there were four of me living here, would all of our heights together be taller than three Mums?"
- Is the outside length of the shed walls longer than the length of the outside walls of our house?"
